How to Help the World's Poor

Poverty is one of the most serious issues affecting the world. On a global level, poverty increases hunger, disease and mortality rates. If you have the desire to help the world's poor, you can do many things to assist this important cause.

1. Set aside a portion of your paycheck or allowance to give to the poor. Pick a charity dedicated to eliminating worldwide poverty. Use the Charity Navigator website as a resource (see Resources below). For international poverty relief, contact ActionAid International USA.
2. Volunteer your time. You can choose to volunteer abroad through the United Planet website.
3. Speak out against poverty. Getting involved in politics can also help the world's poor. Hold rallies and start letter writing campaigns urging elected officials to provide relief to the poor on a global level.

Tips & Warnings

• Even the smallest amount of money can help the poor. Besides money, many organizations accept canned goods as a form of donation.
• You don't need to volunteer a year of your life to help the poor. The United Planet runs programs that start at one week.
