How to Treat Mild Dehydration

Severe cases of dehydration require a visit to the hospital where the staff can introduce fluids through an IV to to speed recovery. In most cases, however, dehydration is mild enough to treat at home.

Instructions

1. Use a rehydration solution containing water and salts to treat the condition. Follow the dosage directions on products like Pedialyte to replace fluids loss during an illness.

2. Continue to breastfeed infants suffering from mild dehydration. Increasing the feeding will keep them hydrated.

3. Provide the patient with a constant supply of water. Six or more 8-ounce glasses is recommended. Do not let them drink anything containing alcohol or caffeine (including colas), which can further dehydrate them.

4. Provide the dehydrated person with a sports drink, such as Gatorade, which replace fluids and provides important electrolytes.

Tips & Warnings

• Call emergency personnel if you suspect severe dehydration. Severe dehydration symptoms include extreme thirst, dry mouth, confusion, sunken appearance and little to no urination.
