How to Recognize Pet Poisoning Symptoms

It's important to keep cleaning products and chemicals out of your pet's reach. Many people use childproof locks on their cabinets to keep young, curious pets safe. If you have products in your garage that can cause harm to your pet, keep them safely tucked away. Large plastic containers work great if you don't have high shelves or a closet to keep them in. However, if you suspect your pet ingested something unsafe, look for these signs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Notice if your pet becomes uncomfortable, drowsy, lethargic and unsteady on his feet. This may be one of the first signs of poisoning.
Step2
Watch for any vomiting or uncontrolled voiding of the bowels and bladder. This is a common symptom, but keep in mind that every poison can result in different symptoms.
Step3
Look for drooling from the mouth or changes in your pet's breathing, such as altered or forced breathing.
Step4
Pay attention to signs of convulsions, muscle tremors or uncontrolled movements such as twitching. Feel or look for any bite marks, noticeable stings or any other markings on his body that are out of the ordinary.
Step5
Note signs of change in your pet's behavior like symptoms of hallucinations, disorientation or confusion.
Step6
Check inside his mouth for burns of any kind to the mouth or tongue or noticeable changes in the color of your pet's gums. If they change to blue, become pale or turn very red, this may indicate poisoning.
Step7
Determine if there are any foul odors coming from his breath or from contamination on his skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call your vet immediately if you suspect pet poisoning. Remember to bring the container and poison with you. The treatment will depend on the type of poison ingested.
