How to Prepare a Salary History for a Job Interview

Many times employers will request a resume and salary history. There are some potential drawbacks, but you may have to take your chances. Send the salary history if the company will not schedule an interview without it first. You can try to avoid sending the salary history with the resume by indicating in your cover letter that you will be happy to discuss salary information once a mutual interest is established.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a copy of your resume in your word processing program, leaving the original copy intact. Rename the copy to something that will reflect the salary history.

    • 2

Keep all of the heading information that contains your name and contact information intact so that the salary history and your resume layout matches.

    • 3

Delete everything else on the page, with the exception of your work history. Leave the employer names, dates and all job titles.

    • 4

Create a blank space or two under each of the positions, and add one or two of your biggest and most memorable accomplishments. Include your total compensation, with bonuses, stock options, tips and any benefits you may have had.

    • 5

Determine, if possible, what your starting and ending salaries were for each position.

    • 6

Add the heading "Confidential Salary History" just beneath your contact information.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not exaggerate information on your resume or salary history. This information can and probably will be checked for accuracy.
