Every football team needs a good quarterback to be a success on the field. Being a good quarterback begins with the fundamentals. Some players lose focus of the basics or take them for granted after a few years of playing the quarterback position. One of the most basic and important fundamental aspects of being a quarterback is learning how to grip the football.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position the laces of the football away from the palm of your hand as you grip the football.

  2. Step 2

Place your ring and pinkie fingers on the laces of the football. This is where there can be some variation due to the size of the quarterback's hands. Some quarterback's hands may be able to place the middle, ring and pinkie fingers on the laces, whereas a person with a smaller hand may be able to reach the laces only with the middle finger, if at all. If you have small hands, just grip as close to the laces on the football as possible.

  3. Step 3

Put your thumb on the side of the football directly opposite from the laces.

  4. Step 4

Move your index finger up toward the point of the football. Again, the placement will vary due to hand size, but you usually want an inch or two between the index finger and the point of the football.

  5. Step 5

Check to see if there is a space between your thumb and forefinger where they form a "U" to support the football. You should be able to spot a gap when a player has a proper grip on the football.

  6. Step 6

Perform exercises to strengthen the hands to better grip a football during quarterback training.
