How to Identify Causes of Stress in Workplace

We all face challenges in our lives at work and at times these challenges are difficult to deal with. When we become overwhelmed or under a lot of pressure we experience stress. In small amounts, stress can be good. It can give you motivation needed to get good results. However, when demands exceed your ability to cope, stress becomes a threat to both your physical and emotional health.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if you are frequently working extra hours. Most people can handle extra hours now and then but if it becomes many extra hours every week it may be too much. It is important to reserve energy and time for other activities such as socializing and getting enough sleep to maintain a healthy life style.

Acknowledge any concerns you have about your job and the security of it. With today's economy, gas prices on the rise and food increases many of us have concerns of what we would do if we lost our job. Most companies and organizations are not hiring and some are lying off, downsizing and not filling empty positions.

    • 3

Notice difficult or long journeys to and from work as a contributor to your stress. Raises are not typically covering the rapid increases in gas prices.

    • 4

Note that inflexible work hours add to the amount of stress a person has. We all have other responsibilities such as children, elderly parents, health issues or medical maintenance. Many of your other commitments or responsibilities must occur during the regular work hours because of the availability of doctors, banks and dentists. With no flexibility in your work schedule, you must cram everything into evenings, weekends, and using your vacation time for medical appointments.

    • 5

Think about your relationship with your colleagues. If there are problems at work with colleagues, especially if you work close with that person it is bound to add stress to your life.

    • 6

Recognize any poor working conditions such as poor maintenance of the building and facilities, insufficient resources, inadequate help and no administrative or management support.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let the job go. At the end of the day go home and enjoy your family or friends.
