Step 1
Make a list of your tastes and personal preferences (style, color, textures, fabrics and lighting) for your bathroom (i.e. Modern, Traditional, interest oriented, et cetera). Whether your tastes are generic to the point that you can only think of your favorite color or specific to the point that you want striped lighthouses and seashells, write every detail on your list.
-
Step 2
Use mass media. Watch interior design and DIY shows, read books on architecture or popular homes, flip through travel magazines or explore Internet sites that offer model home 360 degree video views. Make notes of any items from Step 1, from any form of mass media or while you are out-and-about, that appeal to your tastes and personal preferences.
-
Step 3
Fall in love with swatches. Swatches are the small squares of wallpaper, fabric or paint cards that are typically free and are in their respective areas at your local DIY, home improvement, wallpaper, fabric or other related store. Swatches give you the ability to see what colors and styles do and do not work within your bathroom space without the often costly hassle of buying these products and then driving back and forth to return or replace them.
-
Step 4
Take advantage of modern paint mixers. Most DIY or home improvement stores, such as Home Depot or Lowe's, offer paint color matching that can match the color of a single item (for example, a seashell that you picked up at the beach last summer that is "dark grey, but not quite dark grey...more like storm grey") almost exactly.
-
Step 5
Sketch your ideas and then go to a DIY or home improvement store or a professional interior designer (if all else fails) for design assistance to turn your rough sketch into a solid reality.
