1. Know that you can find ant farms in almost any toy store in addition to many websites on the Internet, including retailers and online auction sites. There are different companies that make ant farms and many more who sell them. You can find ant farms in many different sizes and price ranges.
2. Decide what kind of ant farm you want. The original ant farms with the white sand are still readily available. However, you can also get an ant farm filled with a colored gel through which the ants can dig their tunnels. This non-toxic gel is cleaner, provides nutrition for your ants and makes it a little easier for you to see the ants. Some gel ant farms are even equipped with a light.
3. Remember that if you purchase an ant farm in a store, it will not come with the ants. You can either purchase them online, or mail in the ant order form included in with the farm with a check. Your ants will arrive as soon as it's safe to send them through the mail system.
4. Read the instructions that come with your ant farm. It will tell you how to care for and maintain the ant farm, in addition to how to feed and water your new pets.
