While many women feel that black eyeshadow should be reserved for a night out on the town or dramatic goth looks, blending a natural color with black in just the right way can actually create a subtle look. The use of black eyeshadow can help to create depth and make your eyes look bigger. A few tips can help.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mild cleanser
  • Facial toner (optional)
  • Light moisturizer
  • Natural eyeshadow
  • Black eyeshadow
  • Angled eyeshadow brush
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
  1. Step 1

Start with a clean palette, washing your face with a mild cleanser. If you have oily skin, apply a facial toner to help control shine, and then use a light moisturizer to create your makeup base and protect your skin. Moisturizer should be applied to the eyes as well; however, make sure that it is well blended into the skin and completely dry before beginning your eyeshadow application.

  2. Step 2

Use a natural colored eyeshadow as your base color. Use the powder generously, blending it as well as possible into the eyes and applying from the lash line all the way up to the eyebrows. For added pop, use a natural shadow with a bit of shimmer.

  3. Step 3

Apply black eyeshadow using an angled eyeshadow brush to help control the application. Place a very small amount of black powder on your brush and begin application at the outer edge of your eye, working only into the crease.

  4. Step 4

Move the powder along the crease of your eye, making sure that the small amount of powder is fully blended before adding more. Try to keep the color on the crease and slightly above, avoiding the lower lid as much as possible. The more black you apply, the more dramatic your look will be, so start slow and use as much as you like for your desired look.

  5. Step 5

Finish your eyes with your chosen eyeliner and mascara. If you find that your black eyeshadow is a bit too much for your taste, add a light top layer of your natural shadow color before applying eyeliner and mascara.
