How to Train One's Cat To Play Fetch

Fetch is a game commonly associated with dogs, so it might seem like an unusual feat for a cat. However, with a little practice and a lot of patience, many cats can be trained to play fetch. Even if your cat doesn't become a master fetcher, it's a terrific way to bond with your feline companion.

    Things You'll Need

    • A small ball or other toy
      • 1

Let the cat see the toy. Hold it in your hand or dangle it where the cat can easily see it. Make sure it catches the cat's interest.

      • 2

Toss the toy a short distance and let your cat chase it and play with it for a few seconds. Go get the toy and return to your place.

      • 3

Call the cat by name and encourage her to follow you as you carry the toy. When she follows you, praise her profusely and pet her.

      • 4

Repeat tossing the toy several times, and each time, toss it a little further. Continue to go get the toy, bringing it back to your place and praising your cat each time. Be patient, and eventually kitty will fetch the toy and bring it back to you.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You don't need an expensive toy ball to teach kitty to fetch. A wadded up piece of paper or a rolled up piece of aluminum foil will work just fine. If kitty likes to play with a toy mouse, that will work beautifully. Just be sure the toy is small enough that kitty can carry it in his mouth.

    • Because of the independent nature of cats, some will never learn to play catch. Never get angry or force the issue; just play with your cat and have fun.
