How to Pretend to Be a Real New Yorker

For those of us who live outside of the Big Apple, it's hard to imagine how exciting it would be to live in the city that never sleeps. If where you live is more like "the city that never wakes up," you can still pretend to be a real New Yorker when visiting this major metropolis.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk the streets like you know where you're going. One of the most obvious things that separate tourists from real New Yorkers is the way they maneuver the busy streets. Real New Yorkers move quickly and with purpose, whereas tourists and visitors tend to trundle or stare up at skyscrapers.

    • 2

Avoid eye contact. With so much constant stimulation on the streets of New York City, the people who live there sometimes have to mentally block it out. Unlike Smalltown, USA, people in New York City can't possibly make eye contact with or acknowledge each passerby.

    • 3

Maintain an unfazed facial expression. A real New Yorker has seen everything, so when a spectacle erupts in the busy city, they will often keep on their course and not acknowledge it.

    • 4

Be aggressive when you hail a cab. Real New Yorkers know that you can't hail a cab in the Big Apple by staying still and quiet. They'll often step out in a position that's visible to the cabby (without getting run over), wave their arms and command attention with a whistle or yell.

    • 5

Wear dark colors. Unlike those who live on the opposite coast, New Yorkers tend to wear dark colors more often, which are easier to keep looking clean during those drizzly winter months.

    • 6

Support the Yankees. Many New Yorkers are avid fans of the New York Yankees, including former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
