How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household

Judaism is not just a religion, it's a culture. There are many Jewish traditions to be observed throughout the year. Many of these traditions take place in the home, which you can set up to fully observe Jewish traditions.

    1. Decorate your Home

        Place a mezuzah next to your front door on the outside of your home. Kiss your fingers and touch the mezuzah every time you enter or leave your home.

        Fill your home with traditional Jewish objects such as kiddush cups, Shabbat candlesticks, artwork by Jewish artists and a menorrah.

        Hang your ketubah, the Jewish marriage license, in a prominent place in your home. You may want to keep it next to your wedding picture.

        Include the Torah, Tanakh, Talmud and other rabbinic literature in your book collection.

      Practice Daily Jewish Traditions

        Eat family meals at home. Pray before and after the meal, eat kosher food and have your entire family participate in the meal.

        Celebrate the Shabat with your family every week on the Sabbath. The Sabbath begins at dusk on Friday and ends at dusk on Saturday.

        Light Sabbath candles on Shabat, attend an evening service at synagogue, bless and eat challah and bless and drink wine.

        Open your home to other members of the Jewish community for prayer sessions.
