Step 1
Look for an instructor with whom you feel very comfortable. Tai Chi is a sport that has relaxation as one of its primary purposes. If the instructor's voice is grating to you or if you feel that the instructor doesn't have enough patience for your needs, then look for another, more suitable instructor.

Step 2
Use a therapeutic Tai Chi instructor recommended by your physician or health care provider if you have any major health issues. You will need someone trained in CPR, for example if you just had a heart attack or if you have heart disease. Someone who will not push the students beyond their capabilities and risk injury from falls should teach frail seniors.

Step 3
Visit a tai chi class to watch the instructor before you sign up for classes. You can easily find out in one visit what the emphasis of the class is. Some tai chi instructors focus more on self-defense, while other teachers do more flexibility movements and concentrate on the healthy aspects of the art.

Step 4
Choose a tai chi instructor who has received some training. Anyone can hang a sign and start teaching. You will be much better served if your instructor can show some training through a certificate program of some kind.
