Recording home movies has gotten much easier in the last few decades. With the advent of videotape, DVD and hard drive recording system camcorders, capturing a special moment is simple. While camcorder types, models and manufacturers change, the basic concepts of camcorder operation remain somewhat static.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the viewfinder on the camcorder. This feature is located near the rear of the camcorder body and will resemble a small eyepiece. Use this feature to frame the subject. Some models only use an LCD screen for this function.

  2. Step 2

Find the wide angle and zoom control on the camcorder. This is typically a toggle or slider on the top right of the camera, yet may be located elsewhere on various models. This feature commonly uses only one finger to operate when zooming in or out.

  3. Step 3

Look for the media slot or door. There is typically an indicator button or symbol representing the manner to insert the media. A door may open to allow the introduction of a VHS tape, DV tape or DVD. Some models offer a hard drive and the possibility of a flash media slot. Read over the owner's manual for camcorder specific media options.

  4. Step 4

Use the image manipulation features, such as white balance, shutter speed or aperture to alter or correct the images. Some of these features are digital and are altered in-camera through menus, and others require manual use.

  5. Step 5

Understand that most camcorders are set up very much like a VCR and have many of the same buttons. Rewind, fast-forward and play are common on most all camcorders whether digital or analog.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read through the camcorder's owner's manual before operating the camcorder. This allows the user to better understand the feature sets and amenities on that particular camcorder.
  • Join an online camcorder model specific website forum. These forums allow users to communicate ideas and experiences with the same camcorder.
