How to Use a Compound Bow

Using a bow can give a thrill that few other weapons can match. Something about the draw of the bow, the sighting of the target and the knowledge that you can harness your own strength and send it flying creates this distinct thrill. Compound bows offer better strength magnification, but there's more to using a bow than simply pulling a string.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the bow for any damage, including any damage along the string. Damage can result in snapping the bow and causing you injury. A snapping string is one of the more feared problems. The relatively gentle injuries that you might get along the forearm seem pleasant compared to injuries caused by the high-tension string snapping.

    • 2

Inspect the arrows for flaws. Any flaws can cause misfiring and a strong need for Bactine.

    • 3

Nock the arrow. This position is one of rest, with no string tension, while you line the arrow along the center of the string and on the arrow rest. Since this is a compound bow, you won't need your finger to position the arrow. If you're using a hunting tip, you'll be thankful for that.

    • 4

Use your first two or three fingers to pull the string back. The arrow nock should rest on the string between the top two fingers of your hand (pointer and middle). Pull back until your pointer finger is even with your ear lobe.

    • 5

Sight your target, adjusting for environmental elements such as wind and distance. A compound bow allows for greater distances, so you shouldn't adjust as much as you would for a traditional single-string bow.

    • 6

Release the string, making sure that all of your fingers get clear. This should send the arrow to the target.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since compound bows often have high pull weights, you may want to use three fingers for pulling. Using all four can create clumsiness, though, when you release.

  • Adjust sights, if any, prior to nocking the arrow. This saves you time and prevents you from looking like an amateur if you attempt to adjust sights while the arrow is nocked.

  • You can be seriously injured by an improperly used bow. Make sure to take advantage of all safety apparel and procedures before operating.
