How to Form an LLC for Free

Part of the reason people choose to forms LLCs, or limited liability companies, is to shelter their personal finances from the liability associated with their business. Either manage this process on your own to avoid paying someone else to do it or save yourself the cost of startup fees and add legitimacy to your company by hiring a service to handle all of the legal matters of your company.

  1. Step 1

    Hire a legal services company such as FreeLLCs.com (see Additional Resources) to maintain all of the legal aspects of your business. LLC formation comes free when you purchase s package that includes other legal services that businesses typically use.

  2. Step 2

    Download and fill out an Articles of Organization application for your state on your own if you decide not to hire a legal services company. Legal advice websites such as LLC-made-easy.com often have a list by state where you can find these forms for free.

  3. Step 3

    Send in the form along with any mandatory state fees to the appropriate office in your state. This is usually the secretary of state's office.

  4. Step 4

    Obtain an Employer identification Number, or EIN, by filling out an SS-4 application and sending it to the IRS. Finding someone else to do this for your can cost almost $100 when you can do it yourself for free if you can fax from home or for the cost of postage if you mail the form.
