Once you have a beautiful deck to enjoy, naturally you will want a place to sit down. One way to do this is add permanent benches to the deck. This project will only take a day and it will make enjoying your deck and having parties so much easier.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine the length and width that you want your deck bench to be. A common width is about 1 foot. Measure your deck to make sure that your bench design will fit.

  2. Step 2

Cut the 2 x 4 inch board into the ladder frame pieces for the deck bench. Take the 2 long pieces and nail the shorter cross pieces in between them. The cross or ladder pieces should be about 1 foot apart from each other. Connect both ends with an outer piece.

  3. Step 3

Cut the 4 x 4 inch post to the correct height for the bench. You should have 6 pieces, 1 for each corner and 2 for the middle. Attach to the deck. The easiest way is to screw the pieces up from the bottom of the deck. If your deck is on the ground cut holes into the deck that the posts will fit into and secure directly and firmly in the ground. You may want to stain these posts to match the deck now.

  4. Step 4

Sand the frame of the deck. Attach to the posts on the deck using screws and an electric screwdriver.

  5. Step 5

Attach the deck planking to the frame of the bench seat. Attach with nails to each of the ladder cross pieces. Be sure to evenly space the deck planking.

  6. Step 6

Add a trim by nailing a piece of deck planking directly to the sides of the frame.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take time to carefully plan and measure your project. Drawing the design to scale will help you to visualize all of the pieces you need.
  • Take your measurements to the lumber store when you purchase the wood and they will cut it to your specifications for you.
  • Wear safety goggles when operating power tools and electric saws.
