Children love counting down to the Christmas holiday with paper chains, and you may remember how much you enjoyed counting the days to Christmas with your Advent calendar. You can make an Advent calendar for your children without taking time to make lots of tiny little gifts.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the size of the boxes in the Advent calendar and make sure that any treats you buy fit easily inside the boxes. If you have several children, decide whether you are going to get them each a gift every day or whether they will take turns opening the boxes and receiving a gift. The gifts need to be very tiny if they are each getting a gift.

  2. Step 2

Plan to look for small trinkets at yard sales during the summer. Rings, necklaces and marbles are perfectly sized gifts for an Advent calendar.

  3. Step 3

Hit the gumball machine at your local grocery store and buy a bunch of brightly colored pieces. If they are not already sealed, wrap them in plastic wrap in case they fall out of the calendar when your child opens it.

  4. Step 4

Look for sales on back-to-school supplies and buy erasers and other small items. You could also buy candy on sale after Halloween to stick into the Advent calendar boxes.

  5. Step 5

Purchase gift certificates for stores or restaurants. Fold the certificates so they fit in the boxes. If a certificate is too big or won't bend, put a note in the Advent calendar telling the child that the treat is a gift certificate.
