The way you organize a book report can depend on your instructor if you're preparing a class assignment. If this is the case, check with your teacher for specific instructions before starting your report as the instructor can require that you use a certain format. Otherwise, there are several options for you to choose from as you begin to put your work together.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create an outline for your book report that includes an introduction, body and conclusion. This step can help you organize your thoughts, set up a plan and provide structure for your writing. See Additional Resources for examples of various formats you can use for a book report.

  2. Step 2

Include bibliographic information and a short description about the book in the introduction. Tell the reader what influenced your decision to write about the book.

  3. Step 3

Explain the main idea of the book in the body of the report. The description you provide in this section depends on if you are writing about fiction or non-fiction work.

  4. Step 4

Describe the setting, point of view, time period, main characters and plot if you are writing about work of fiction. Be sure to include a concise summary of the plot that includes significant details involving the climax and resolution of the piece. Discuss the mood or tone if applicable.

  5. Step 5

If the book is non-fiction, describe the subject and summary. Offer a general overview that includes the topic, main points, arguments and conclusion. Focus on what is significant and important without writing a summary of each chapter.

  6. Step 6

Express your personal opinion of the book in the conclusion. Provide an honest impression and end the book report.
