A company description is the first and most essential part of a business plan. For the caterer, your company description tells investors and customers who you are and what you offer. To write this description, think hard about what makes you unique and different.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the basics of your catering company, such as type of catering, time in business and what you offer. Work on this one sentence until it captures the most basic facts about your catering company. One example: Howya Caterers is a specialty caterer providing fresh baked pastries to groups of 25 of 50 in greater Java County since 2001.

  2. Step 2

Fill in the who, what, when, where, how and why of your catering business. Specify the service you provide and the need you fill. Remember that the person reading your company description knows nothing about you or your business. Pretend you are writing a report for someone in another country who has no idea what makes you special. Limit yourself to 100 words.

  3. Step 3

Check your description with any of the free sample business plans available on the Internet or from your library. Entrepreneur.com (see Additional Resources) gives dozens of free business plans; read company descriptions and work on yours until it is as clear and informative as these samples. The description should clarify your niche in the market.
