Many recreational boats travel back and forth from the water on a trailer. A trailer hitch attaches to your road vehicle for easy transportation. Once you get to your destination, you must be familiar with the procedures of unloading your boat into the water. The key is to take proper precautions and be prepared so that you don't hold up or interfere with other boaters waiting to launch their boats.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drive to the designated unloading ramp of the boat launch and back your trailer and boat down the ramp slowly.

  2. Step 2

Set your emergency break, shift your vehicle into "park" and put blocks behind your tires.

  3. Step 3

Board the boat and do initial preparations. Start by turning on the blower and lowering the boat's motor.

  4. Step 4

Check for water entering the boat and sniff for fuel leaks. If everything seems normal, start the boat's engine.

  5. Step 5

Release the winch and disconnect the line from the bow when all parties are ready.

  6. Step 6

Back up the boat under power or have someone give the boat a gentle shove.

  7. Step 7

Return your road vehicle to the parking lot immediately so the next person in line can launch.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's easier if one person takes charge of the road vehicle and another person operates the boat.
  • Attach your winch line to the bow before you back down the boat ramp.
  • Don't back up so far down the ramp that your road vehicle's back tires get wet. If this happens, chances are you'll also submerge your exhaust system and stall your vehicle.

on 2/11/2009 Boat prep must be done in the pullout area aside the launch ramp. NEVER on the ramp itself!
