Step 1
Examine the thickness of several ergonomic wrist rests before you make your purchase. The best ones are about the same size as the front of your keyboard. Place your wrist on several different ones, preferably in front of a keyboard, before making a firm decision. It should be large enough to spread out over a big area but shouldn't be less than two inches long. If it's too deep you may wind up leaning too far forward with your arms causing more stress on your shoulders.
-
Step 2
Choose an ergonomic wrist rest that has no pointy edges where your wrist will lay. This will only cause you more discomfort and not be worth the money you paid for it. Buy one that is soft and comfortable against your skin. Also, be sure that your ergonomic wrist rest doesn't create too much friction. This may cause cramping in your arm.
-
Step 3
Shop around for a wrist rest that is not too expensive so that when it gets dirty you can just throw it away and replace it with another one. Many are made from washable materials.
-
Step 4
Decide if you want a wrist rest that has a mouse attached to it. If so, the rest should move simultaneously with the mouse.
-
Step 5
Determine if there is a warranty on the wrist rest you are considering buying. Defects in ergonomic wrist rests can cause you more pain and discomfort than you bargained for and you may want to get your money back or replace it with one that is better made.
