How to Snap Fingers

When you snap your fingers, the snapping noise comes from the friction you create by forcing your middle finger off your thumb at a high speed. It's a simple motion that takes practice to master. Once learned, you'll always be able to snap your fingers.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with your dominant hand, as it's easier to learn the technique with that hand. Once you learn the technique, you can practice your other hand until you're an ambidextrous snapper.

    • 2

Put the tip of your middle finger on the tip of your thumb and press them together firmly.

    • 3

Press the side of your pointer finger against your middle finger, and use it to help push the middle finger off of the thumb with more power.

    • 4

Push down with both your middle finger and your pointer finger very hard and very quickly to force your middle finger off your thumb. You'll probably hear a slight sound that's not really a snap as your finger slides down the side of your thumb.

    • 5

Practice this movement until you can do it very quickly, producing the snapping sound you desire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some people find it easier to snap their fingers if they lick their thumb first. Others find that moisture inhibits their ability to snap their fingers. Try both methods to see which is most effective for you.

  • You may or may not be able to create an equally loud snap with your non-dominant hand, but you should be able to produce a recognizable finger snapping sound.
