A hot towel is the perfect way to open your pores, reduce muscle pain or simply relax after a long day. With the addition of a few drops of essential oil, a hot towel becomes even more relaxing and therapeutic. You can heat the towel in the microwave for a hot towel spa or barber treatment at home, but it is important to heat them correctly and safely. You can also use the microwave to heat the water and then apply it to the towel if heating a towel in the microwave makes you nervous.

The Direct Method

Choose Your Oil

If desired, place a few drops of essential oil such as lavender, rosemary or sandalwood in the center of the towel.

Vapor rub can also be used.

Whatever scent you choose, use it sparingly as it will be more powerful when it's hot and steamy.

Wet The Towel and Wring

Wet the towel thoroughly and then wring out the excess water, the towel should be damp but not dripping when it goes into the microwave.

Microwave The Wet Towel

Place the damp towel on a microwave-safe plate or in a small ovenproof dish. Microwave it for 30 seconds and then place the hot towel on your face or sore muscles.

Check the towel with your fingers and make sure it is not too hot before using it on your body.

Warning

A dry towel will catch fire in the microwave within 15 seconds. Make sure your towel is damp all the way through before starting the microwave.

The Indirect Method

Contain Your Towel

Place your towel in a large bowl or pan deep enough to hold a cup of water. If you want to use essential oils, pace a few drops of them on the towel before placing it in the bowl.

Microwave the Water

Place 1 cup of water in the microwave and cook it until it just begins to boil. Cooking time for this will vary depending on the wattage of your microwave. The cooking time will be:

Pour and Enjoy

Pour the heated water over the towel to wet it. When the towel is cool enough to touch, wring it out and apply it where you need it.
