Many programs exist to help procure tax assistance for the disabled. Finding assistance through the IRS, your state or municipality isn't difficult. Here are the easiest ways to get that tax help.

From Quick Guide: AARP Tax Help
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact your local IRS office by following the link in the Resources section and clicking on your state on the interactive map to retrieve disability organization contact information that the office of Stakeholder Partners, Education and Communication (SPEC) has for your area. If the disabled person is unable to pay their taxes, use IRS Telephone Assistance to immediately make the IRS aware of any status changes, terminal or chronic illness updates or payment problems and to work with a representative to come up with solutions that meet the needs of the disabled person.

  2. Step 2

Call your state or municipality tax offices for information. If you would like to review the information online for your state, visit your state's Department of Revenue website by conducting a basic web search that features your state's name and the word(s) "revenue" or "department of revenue" in the search field.

  3. Step 3

Ask your accountant or contact local tax preparation firms about tax assistance programs or pro bono services that may be available for those with disabilities.

  4. Step 4

Seek information through your local Social Service/Public Welfare office or Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR). Counselors at these offices not only network with employers and other social service providers to assist the disabled, but also help network individuals with life skills partners and programs that offer tax preparation instruction and assistance.
