Step 1
Prepare to spend some time transitioning from red to silver. This process involves a great deal of maintenance and upkeep while you make the change and it takes a great deal of patience as well to move through the awkward middle phase.
-
Step 2
Meet with your stylist and if you don't have a colorist, it's time to get one. It is very challenging to go from red to silver hair as you are going from a richly pigmented warm tone to an opposite barely pigmented cool tone. A colorist and stylist can help you come up with the best plan for going from red to silver.
-
Step 3
Ask for a single process red a few shades lighter than your previous red, or ask for lowlights and highlights to minimize red and help get you to silver. You could also do all three of these things. A toner may be helpful as well. Highlights and lowlights are the best way to conceal the color line as your natural gray hair grows out.
-
Step 4
Consider cutting your hair to chin length to get rid of as much of the old red color as possible as minimize the appearance of red as your grow out your hair. The red will tend to be deeper at the ends, and will be harder to conceal. Regular trims after you get the initial cut will also help to keep your hair healthy and make the transition smoother.

Step 5
Invest in a silver, lavender or blue rinse to use on occasion to help bring out the cooler silver tone. Also use shampoos and hair styling products designed for gray hair with shine boosters, UV filters and silver highlighters.
