As hair goes gray, it can be challenging to overcome the gray hair elder-stigma that has dominated Western culture since hair dye was invented. Thankfully, times are changing and more and more people are tossing the bottle and embracing their silver locks. If you're trying to transition from brunette to silver, the process requires extra time, patience and a great colorist to go gray gracefully.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider going blonde before your go silver. Brunette hair, as it grows out, creates a strong contrast to your natural salt and pepper or gray. If you slowly lighten your hair to a light ash brown or cool blonde it may blur the color line as it grows out.

  2. Step 2

Make an appointment with your stylist and colorist to get a plan together for the transition from brunette to silver. The process takes several months as your gray hair grows out and will require a lot of color processing, maintenance cuts and upkeep to keep your hair looking its best.

  3. Step 3

Ask for lowlights and highlights. A colorist can help you determine which lowlight and highlight shades to use to bring your hair from brunette to silver. They may start by adding lighter brunette highlights and then slowly moving the highlights to a cooler blonde, gray, silver or white. As you natural hair grows out, they can help ease the transition by concealing the stark contrast between the old growth and new growth with clever color.

  4. Step 4

Cut your hair as short as you can stand it while you transition from brunette to gray. This will help you to get rid of the old color much faster and minimize the contrast between the ends, which are usually darker if you have color-treated hair, and the natural roots which are inevitable lighter. Get routine maintenance trims to keep your hair looking healthy and to keep removing more and more of the brown.

  5. Step 5

Use products designed to work with gray hair that contains UV filters and shine boosters to keep hair looking healthy. Brunettes might have a hard time avoiding a yellowish cast to their gray hair which can make the overall hair look dingy, so using products with a silver, lavender, blue or white rinse in them can help to keep the yellow away while bringing out the new gray and silver highlights and natural growth.
