1. Learn the types of braids. For simple hairstyles, consider straight braids that incorporate one center braid or two pig style type braids. French braids are more elaborate in that intricate weaving begins higher on the head and closer to the scalp than straight braids. Cover the head in mini braids and leave them in for an extended period of time to create micro braids. Clipping straight or micro braids on top of the head creates an up-do hairstyle with braids and braids with no specific style are sloppy braids.

2. Determine the length of your hair. The hair lengths that work best with braids are medium and long, because the hair length is weaved into the braid. Micro braids can work on shorter hair, even in men, but hiring a professional hairstylist to achieve the best look is a good idea.

3. Know the occasion you want to choose the hairstyle for. For a quick, informal hairstyle, the sloppy braid is a good option. But for an elegant or formal event, consider a French braid, or an up-do with one or more straight braids.

4. Attempt each braid hairstyle that you like. To choose from braid hairstyles that best suit your needs and facial features, try each individual braid and style. Women with high foreheads may choose a sloppy braid because it doesn't pull the hair tight on the head, and also allows for bangs to be pulled down in order to hide the forehead.
