Abdominal pain can come from many different sources and treating it successfully often depends on the cause. Severe or chronic abdominal pain must be seen by a medical professional as some abdominal pain can be the sign of a serious problem. Abdominal pain can be caused by irritable bowl syndrome, appendicitis, gallstones or other issues.

  • Talk to your doctor about the abdominal pain that you are experiencing, particularly if the pain is severe or if it keeps occurring. Some abdominal pain may be more straightforward (such as menstrual cycle cramping) than others and may end within a relatively short period of time. In those cases, home remedies are often fine. However, abdominal pain should not be ignored if it is more serious or if the cause is unknown.

  • Use an over the counter antacid for abdominal pain that is related to heartburn. You can also find medications that will help treat excess gas, which can also cause abdominal pain and discomfort. If the symptoms are persistent, talk to your doctor about how to prevent them from happening.

  • Take a warm bath or place a heating pad over the area. Many people find that the warmth helps reduce the pain and ease minor problems. This can be particularly useful for menstrual cramps.

  • Try taking an over the counter pain medication. You'll want to stay away from ibuprofen and aspirin as they can both irritate the stomach and lead to more abdominal pain. Instead, choose acetaminophen products will are less likely to cause irritation.

  • Rest, drink fluids to prevent dehydration and eat small meals. In many cases, abdominal pain will pass if you take it easy for awhile. Choose mild foods and stay away from fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine and spicy choices. Many people find it helpful to take small, frequent sips of non carbonated drinks is better than drinking a lot at once.
