How to do a Military House Swap
A PCS move is never easy on a family and requires immense amounts of planning to go as smoothly as possible. Military house swaps are becoming more and more popular as you can take at least some of the guesswork out of your new duty station by having somewhere to stay.

1
Have all the details of your PCS move to hand. With an ever changing military calendar and a less than accurate time line, your details may be sketchy. Find out everything you can prior to the move to begin your search.
-
2
Look at listings online (see Resources) to find suitable accommodations at your new duty station. These deal primarily with properties in North America so if your move is oversees then contact the housing authority. Properties deal with most bases but obviously, the bigger the facility, the more available accommodation.

3
See how each property will affect your entitlement and benefits. Depending on where you go you may get additional COLA or have your housing allowance reduced because of various different factors such as pay grades or market conditions. Find out what you're going to get before you commit to anything so you know that it is within your budget and requirements.

4
Mapquest the location of the property in relation to the base or facility and then look at the amenities in the surrounding area. Close proximity to the base may be important but local schools, businesses and recreational facilities are also things you want close to hand. If the base is in a very remote location, you may want to look for properties in between this and the local towns.

5
Contact your housing authority such as the AHOS for the Army housing one stop and find out what paperwork you need to submit and the other measures that you need to take to move to your chosen property. The housing authorities will give you checklists and valuable information and can better advise you on current procedures for your particular unit.
