How to do Pom Squad Routines

Being on the pom squad is an honor and a privilege. It takes dedication, rhythm and a cheery attitude to be your best. Whether you're just trying out or you're on the squad and trying to figure out how to keep all the routines separate, don't worry. These few tips will help you accelerate your performance and keep you in step with the rest of the pom squad.

Instructions

  1. While Preparing

    • 1

Get the right pompons and all uniforms for your squad. In most situations, you'll have to buy the prescribed pompons and uniforms yourself. It doesn't hurt to order a back-up pair of pompons just in case you leave yours in the locker room at an away game or forget them in the stands.

    • 2

Attend every practice and give your all while you're there. Remember that, as fun as the girls on your squad are, practice isn't the time to socialize. Make plans after practice to talk about your love lives and your math worries. Stay alert and focused each practice, and you'll pick up the moves in no time.

    • 3

Stretch properly with a small warm-up cardio session before each practice. This will ensure you stay limber and don't overextend your muscles.

    • 4

Follow your coach's corrections. If terms are unclear, ask for clarification. When you feel lost in a routine, stay late to get extra help or find a good friend on the squad who can help you one-on-one.

    • 5

Position yourself in the back if you're lagging behind and watch one of the stronger members perform. Mimic her actions down to the snap of her wrists. Using a stronger member of the team as your role model can only be to your advantage.

    • 6

Stay in sync with the rest of the team and know your specific part. Many routines have parts that split. Know your part and the music you're performing to, and remain determined to perform your best at every practice and every game.

    During Performances

    • 7

Smile during the whole routine. Pretend that all eyes are on you and you're the star of the show. This is what brings energy to the routine.

    • 8

Hold your pompons firmly. Since there are lots of turns and arm movements to your routines, it's imperative that you not lose the pompons and thereby draw attention away from the routine. Unless you're throwing and catching your poms, make sure they don't leave your hands.

    • 9

Make your entrances and exits dynamic. Flips, cartwheels and spirit fingers are all ways to bring energy to the floor before and after your routine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't become distracted by squad members who are doing something different than you.

  • Remember, no "woos." Yelling "woo!" is for the crowd, not the pom squad. Use your voice intentionally to say the words your squad has agreed to say.
