Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fashion fabric
  • Lining
  • Interfacing
  • Tailor's tape- preshrunk
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Muslin
  • Straight pins
  • Basic men's suit pattern
  • Man's measurements
  • Tracing wheel
  1. Step 1

Begin with a muslin mock-up. This is the first draft of the suit. Make it from a basic suit pattern. Choose the suit pattern that fits the man's largest measurement.

  2. Step 2

Fit the muslin mock-up onto the man. Use pins to mark each alteration that will need to be made everywhere from the sleeve and jacket length to the armholes and waist of the pants. This is the most important step to make sure everything will fit perfectly.

  3. Step 3

Take the muslin pieces apart and use the tracing wheel to make an appropriate pattern on paper. Add at least a ½-inch seam allowance to the pattern. Cut it out.

  4. Step 4

Use the pattern pieces to cut out suit pieces from the fashion fabric and lining. Cut pieces of interfacing for the front of the jacket and the lapels.

  5. Step 5

Start sewing together each piece. First sew together the shoulder seam of the jacket, followed by the sides. Then sew on the sleeves and finally the collar and lapels. Line the edge of the sleeves, pant cuffs and lapels with tailor's tape.

  6. Step 6

Press each seam open very carefully as you stitch the pieces together. This is an essential step, as it will make the suit lie flat on the man's body.

  7. Step 7

Finish the suit by hemming the sleeve and pant cuffs. Add pockets, buttons and button holes.
