Step 1
Learn how to play the basic heavy metal guitar before moving on to more advanced playing techniques. This includes using a pick, finger placement and basic chords and notes, plus an understanding of the frets.
-
Step 2
Place your right hand over the fret board (unless you are a lefty, then every thing is the opposite). Tap out the notes with this hand, not on the frets, but in between the frets. If you tap directly on the frets the sound will be out of tune or just sound terrible.
-
Step 3
Add a component by using your left hand as you normally would with a pick or just finger-picking to play two notes at once, or bend, slide or stretch notes. This can be a lot of fun to use in heavy metal guitar playing, plus being a great way to show off to your friends.
-
Step 4
Practice this technique every day in order to get it down. It really takes a concentrated effort to play both hands at once, in different areas of the guitar, producing two different sounds. Once you have this technique down, you can add it in when playing with friends or a band.
