Being charged with a criminal offense is hard to deal with, especially if you feel that you didn't break the law. If you want to prove that you aren't guilty of a criminal offense, you have to take the time to research your case so you can prove that you are innocent.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Keep all records and papers that are given to you at any time during your arrest and other court procedures. If possible, write out the name of anyone involved in the crime, your arrest and any other situations that pertain to your case. Make a mental note of any that you think prove that you are innocent.
Step2
Speak to a criminal defense attorney. If you are unable to afford an attorney, you may have to deal with a public defender. Whether your attorney is a privately paid attorney or a public defender, constant contact with your attorney is a must. Make sure that your attorney has all documents related to your case.
Step3
Read law books to learn the criteria for a conviction of the crime for which you are being charged. Look for any loophole or technicality that you think will help you. Talk to your lawyer about the possibility. Take a look at the sentencing possibilities while you are reading up on the subject.
Step4
Go to court before your court date. Pay attention to the things the judge says to anyone who is charged with the same or similar charges as you. This will give you an idea of what to expect when you go to court.
Step5
Practice your testimony. This is very important if you will have a jury trial. Keep in mind that you have to tell the truth but, how you present the truth can help your case. Ask your lawyer for advice about your testimony.
Step6
Dress appropriately for your court date. You want to look like an upstanding citizen. Business attire, such as a suit or nice dress, can be good to wear to a court appearance.
Step7
Stay calm. Acting hysterical or unruly will probably convince people that you are guilty instead of innocent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that in order for you to be found guilty, the prosecution will have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you are guilty. If there is a way for you plant a seed of doubt about the charges, ask your attorney if they will work in your case.
