Be a bookkeeper. Bookkeeping falls under an accounting education. You use many of the principals in accounting in bookkeeping and it is relatively easy to get a bookkeeping job since every business needs to have a bookkeeper. You can get these accounting classes at any high school, business school or community college--you don't need a college degree.

Work as an accountant. An accountant does more than a bookkeeper does. He must be able to go over the work the bookkeeper does on a regular basis and check the books for discrepancies. Then he prepares the accounting statements that every business needs to operate. You can get accounting classes at many colleges, but you don't have to have a degree in accounting to be an accountant, but it certainly helps.

Try to work as an auditor. An auditor's job is more detailed than an accountant's job. When there is a mistake the auditor has to find where the mistake is and correct it. He works as a detective and does more intense work than the bookkeeper or accountant. He also keeps everyone honest. His job is to be sure that no one takes advantage of the business--insiders as well as outsiders. You need a college degree in order to get a position as an auditor.

Use your accounting background to get a job in banking or finance. Many accountants and bookkeepers use their backgrounds to work in the banking or finance field. The position you want will determine how much bookkeeping and accounting you need. The high school level may get your foot in the door, but a college degree can be your ticket to a much more rewarding accounting position.
