How to Fix iPod Hardware Problems

iPods are probably the most popular MP3 player today. Sometimes, these little darlings don't work. Fortunately, it's possible to do some hardware repairs yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out what's wrong with your iPod when you are trying to fix hardware problems, narrowing down whether it's the LCD screen, the hard drive, the jack or something else that's not working. You can do this by comparing your iPod to that of a friend's that's working well.

    • 2

Take off the faceplate from your iPod by unscrewing the small screws on the back of the iPod with a small screwdriver. Screwdrivers that come from eyeglasses repair kits work very well. Undo the three clips and remove the faceplate from the back plate as you seek to fix iPod hardware problems.

    • 3

Lift the faceplate only about two inches from the back plate so you don't put too much strain on the headphone jack cables as well as the battery cable.

    • 4

Remove the portions that aren't working (see step one to help identify which ones these are). Keep any clips or mounts that are needed to keep the portions you are removing.

    • 5

Replace the hardware portion of your iPod in the reverse order as when you took out the faulty one. Check all of your connections before proceeding.

    • 6

Put the faceplate back on and secure it in place, squeezing the backplate and the faceplate together until they click. Tighten the screws.
