Things You'll Need:
- Hooks
- Tablecloth
- Storage bins
- Shoeboxes
-
Step 1
Designate specific areas of the room for specific functions. For example: one corner for the hamper, a section for the shoe rack, another area for hanging pajamas and can-still-be-worn-before-laundry-day apparel, and a shelf for books and magazines. When areas are designated, organization becomes easier.
-
Step 2
Install hanging hooks on walls and doors to help organize robes, bags, belts, caps and accessories.
-
Step 3
Use storage bins for seldom-used items like winter clothes and thick blankets. Bins of assorted sizes and shapes are commercially available. Choose the ones that will fit in your cabinets, walk-in closets and under the bed.
-
Step 4
Use shoeboxes to store shoes. Instead of leaving seldom-used pairs of shoes to gather dust on the shoe rack, store them in their original boxes. Label each box with a description or a snapshot of the contents and stack them in the closet.
-
Step 5
Make a storage nightstand.Make a nightstand using a plastic storage bin or thick cardboard box. Stand the box on its side and cover with a tablecloth. Store books, accessories and other items inside the makeshift nightstand.
-
Step 6
Utilize the space under the bed. Keep flat storage boxes, a folding cot or a spare thin mattress hidden under the bed.
-
Step 7
Utilize the space overhead. Install high shelves to store or display hats, décor, and favorite accessories. Don't forget the tops of cabinets and armoires.
-
Step 8
Add a futon or sofa bed.Add a futon or a sofa bed to the room to serve as a couch as well as an instant bed for sleepovers.
-
Step 9
Declutter regularly by giving away old or disfavored clothes, shoes and accessories.
