Prepare For An Unexpected Earthquake
Prepare For An Unexpected Earthquake

Think about it. Could you have an earthquake where you live? I lived in California for about 10 years and have been through some. Then our family moved to Iowa and I thought we were safe from earthquakes. Wrong! We’ve had a couple here too. Who would have thought. No matter where you live there can be an unexpected earthquake. An earthquake can happen either day or night. There are things you can do now to prepare for an earthquake. The steps below may help you get prepared for that unexpected earthquake.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone number
  • Battery Operated Radio
  • First Aid Kit
  • Water
  • Food
  • Medication
  1. Step 1

Develop an earthquake plan. If an earthquake happens during the day your family members may be at work or school, you will need a safe place where your family members can reunite after the earthquake. Always have an alternate place where you can meet.

  2. Step 2

Each of you need an out-of-the-area telephone number of a person you can contact. Designate a relative or friend that everyone knows. All members of your family should call this contact and report their condition and location. Make sure family members have this number with them at all times. Make sure all your other friends and relatives know this number too.

  3. Step 3

Store emergency supplies. After a major earthquake some things could be restricted for days or weeks, such as medical aid, transportation, water, electricity, and communication. Be prepared to take care of yourself, your family, and your neighbors

  4. Step 4

Store flashlights, batteries, a fire extinguisher, a battery-operated radio, and a first-aid kit at home, at work and even in your car. Have at least one gallon of water per person per day, food, warm clothes, and a fresh supply of any medications you and your family members may need.

  5. Step 5

Your pets should be included in your planning. Plan for their food and water supplies for at least three days. Make arrangements with a close neighbor to care for your pet if you are unable to get home right away.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a course in first aid from your local chapter of the American Red Cross.
  • Know where your gas, electric, and water main shut offs are and how to turn each off.
  • Know the policy of your local school concerning release of children after an earthquake.

on 7/17/2008 We felt a small earthquake here in Colorado the other day. This article comes right in time. Should you stay inside or run outside durning a quake? I heard the "stay under the door way" thing was wrong.
