When learning to do an aikido arm lock throw, you may be surprised to learn that aikido is a relatively non-aggressive martial art that relies on a series of throws, locks and other holding techniques to stop an attacker. Aikido techniques, like an aikido arm lock throw, use an opponent's balance against him by remaining planted in the stance, moving offensively to defend yourself from an attack.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stretch your muscles to prepare them for the sudden moves that occur when you attempt to do an aikido arm lock throw. Stretching will help prevent injury.

  2. Step 2

Step off line from your attacker to avoid meeting harms way. Move quickly to get behind your attacker's arm.

  3. Step 3

Grab the arm your opponent uses to attack you as he attempts to grab you from behind. This gives you the advantage to control the arm and take the attacking arm out of your way.

  4. Step 4

Twist your hips and turn toward the right while you grab hold of your attacker's arm at the elbow. This will put you directly behind his arm. Lock your attacker's arm by applying steady pressure at the elbow in this position, and then turn him as you lead him by the arm to throw him off balance. Throw him to the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • A student of aikido never initiates a fight.
  • Wear the proper clothing before learning to do an aikido arm lock throw. You need to be able to move comfortably and freely.
  • Avoid meeting your attacker face to face where you may be forced to exchange blows. Remember, aikido is not an aggressive fight style, so the arm lock throw is meant to defend against an attack.
