How to Prepare Students for College

Reality seems to strike youngsters once they go off to college. It is here that they learn independence and begin to prepare for a career. Preparing students for college is just as important as the college experience itself. Students need to begin to learn to plan time wisely, study hard and make the most of their potential while in high school.

Instructions

    • 1

Advise the student to take challenging classes in high school before heading off to college. Even if the student isn't an honors student, she still needs to learn to challenge herself to prepare for college.

    • 2

Help the student plan his time wisely. While extracurricular activities are very important, the child must learn to prioritize his time. Bring him to campus and shadow another student for a day to see how the college student plans his time.

    • 3

Encourage the student to stay away from the party scene. Educate the student about alcohol and drugs before she heads off to college and gets into trouble. Visit the college and meet with the clinic staff to discuss their views on binge drinking and drugs on campus.

    • 4

Prepare the student to be proactive and to get the support that he needs. Many times students do not know where to seek advice on the college campus, and this must be addressed before he heads off to the big world. When you visit the campus, meet with an adviser or mentor for your child to seek out when he is in need of support.

    • 5

Seek financial aid for the student. Help her find out about various scholarships or financial aid that will help her reduce the amount of money that she owes once her education is complete. Contact the college about specific scholarships that you may not be aware of.
