Money, and especially lack of it, is the main reason many people divorce. Infidelity which is what most people think would cause them to get divorce is less common.

1. Get money counseling before you get married. The best time to deal with possible money issues in a marriage is before you get married. You need to know how your fiancé deals with money and what kind of debts and assets he or she is bringing into the relationship. (It will also reveal the character of that person.)

2. Be forthcoming about debt and spending weaknesses. No one is perfect and imperfections can only be fixed if they are admitted. You need to thoroughly discuss where you are weak with your money and where you tend to go astray in your financial plan. This will help you and your spouse to assign responsibilities.

3. Assign money related jobs: When you know where you are strong and weak when it comes to money, you will be able to assign money related tasks to each person. For example, one the person with the most self-control can do the bulk of the shopping. The person who is a natural planner can decide how much needs to be spent and saved.

4. Understand that there will be setbacks. Someone will overspend. Someone will make a bad investment. These are just facts. When you have financial setbacks, you need to step back and re-evaluate the situation. Find out where you went wrong, make adjustments to change the situation. Do not try to punish the person who made the mistake, just take steps to rectify the damage.

5. Don’t take it personally. Do not take marital financial issues personally. If one of you blows a good amount of money, or if someone accidentally pays the same bill two times, it does not mean they love you any less. Learn to separate the state of your finances from your commitment to each other.
