Children learn the alphabet starting by singing their ABC's. However, at age 4 and up they must recognize them out of order and by sight. This is frustrating to some children so I tried this versatile idea by using bean bags.

From Quick Guide: Fun at Home with Kids
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • beans...imitation white beads used for stuffing bean bag chairs... at any hobby department or craft store
  • scrap material
  • white poster paint
  • Or skip all of the above and purchase bean bags pre-made with the capital and lower case letters already printed on them (in any teachers catalog)
  • Large capital and lower case letters posted first all together and then scattered throughout the room.
  • Sewing Machine easies...needles and thread can work also

How to Teach the Alphabet as a Game

  1. Step 1

To make your own bean bags by imitation white small beads used in stuffing bean bag chairs. Regular beans tend to break up and also can be ruined if they get wet.

  2. Step 2

Purchase as much material as you need to make 26 small, or medium sized squares to fill with the beans. Cut two squares of equal size and stitch together with the wrong sides facing each other. Stitch three sides only and then to inside out so the right sides are facing each other.

  3. Step 3

Fill the fourth side with about 1-2 cups of imitation stuffing beads and then sew the fourth side to finish the square. Using white tempra paint write the capital and lower case letter for each alphabet letter. Let dry and then turn over and write the same capital and lower case letter on the opposite side.

  4. Step 4

Start the game by tossing the bean bags to the children and let them find the matching letter from posted letters in the correct abc order.
As they become more proficient scatter the letters or switch the abc order and then have them find the matching letter. Another option is to make a hopscotch in squares or shapes (like a caterpillar with circles) or a snake and place the capital and lower case letters on the shapes. Children use the bean bags as they hopscotch and must say the letters as they toss the bean bag for another turn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the bean bags as a game for introducing self, saying the next sight word, lining up in the order needed to go on a trip or outside. The fighting over who is line leader stops as the students line up according to where their letter is in the alphabet.
  • If only needing a specific number of beanbags for the number of children you have try keeping the letters within that range. An example of this is the number 15 use the alphabet bags for A-O only otherwise it is too time consuming.
  • Sewing machine should be done by older children or adults
  • bean stuffing adult needed to be sure they don't scatter.
  • This project can be used to teach colors( of bean bags, match to other colored objects, and to teach numbers 1-26 and higher if more bags made). Inexpensive grograin, satin material works best for sliding on hopscotch game
