Cheerleading has many basic arm movements that, when used together, create a fluid routine. The "punch," often called the "touchdown" due to the goalpost look of the arms, is used frequently--both with and without poms--when standing along the sideline and during a routine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart, feet facing forward. Bring both arms up over your head, keeping your back straight and shoulders pushed down. Keep your arms slightly in front of you, parallel to each other. Roll your fingers into fists, thumb tucked in, pinkies facing the crowd. This is the punch, or the touchdown.

  2. Step 2

Bring your left arm down and place your fist on your left hip. Keep your right arm straight above your head. This is the right punch, or right touchdown.

  3. Step 3

Place your right fist on your right hip and punch your left arm up above your head, straight, with your pinky to the crowd. Keep your body aligned in this left punch, or left touchdown.

  4. Step 4

Keep your right fist at your right hip and move your left arm down in line with your leg, knuckles facing the ground. Your thumb faces the crowd now in this low left punch, or low left touchdown.

  5. Step 5

Switch your arms, placing your left fist at your left hip and right arm down in front of you. Keep your right knuckles facing the ground and your thumb facing the crowd. This is the low right punch, or low right touchdown.

  6. Step 6

Bring both arms down in front of you, straight and parallel to each other. Keep your shoulders down, head high and back straight as you do this low punch, or low touchdown.

  7. Step 7

Practice these six punches until you feel you can do them without thinking about the angle of your arm or placement of your fist. Incorporate the touchdowns into your cheerleading routine, adding poms for emphasis.
