The four key areas to consider when accessorizing a bike with new handlebars are thickness, material, width and bar reach. With your bike handlebars, you'll be going down the road together for a long time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select the thickness of your handlebar. This is a matter of personal choice. You may go with a standard-sized bar or choose an oversized one. Depending on how you ride, choosing one or the other can make a big difference.

  2. Step 2

Decide on your handlebar materials. There are many options. Alloy bars are cheap and come in a variety of styles but can add a great deal of weight. On the other hand, carbon bars are incredibly light and durable but expensive.

  3. Step 3

Check out different handlebars in person. Look at other cyclists' handlebars. Many manufacturers measure their bars differently, so unless you have a deep knowledge of one type of bar, it is best to check them out in person. Your handlebars should be no wider than your chest.

  4. Step 4

Select a bar reach that fits your style and comfort levels. The bar reach is the length a bar rests from where you sit on the bike. This should be a comfortable distance for you. This comes down to a personal choice between round reaches and anatomic reaches. Try each out, and see which feels more natural to you.

  5. Step 5

Try out different handlebars, and hold them like you are riding. You want the handlebars to be comfortable and to be in the style that fits your needs.
