How to Tear Away Paper From Quilt

If you've never quilted, a paper pieced log cabin pattern is a perfect way to start. The log cabin is a traditional pattern loved by generations of quilters. It's a versatile pattern that can by made in old-fashioned fabrics, or bold modern prints. A log cabin quilt can be large enough for a king bed, or small enough to hang on the wall. Paper piecing is a fairly new method that makes it easy to create a perfect quilt block.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Completed paper pieced log cabin quilt block
  • Sewing machine
  • Cutting mat
  • Rotary cutter
  • Heavy plastic quilting ruler
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  1. Step 1

    Press the paper pieced log cabin quilt block with a warm iron so it lies flat and smooth.

  2. Step 2

    Lay the quilt block on the cutting mat with the paper side up.

  3. Step 3

    Line up the ruler carefully with the 1/4-inch mark on the black outer line of the pattern.

  4. Step 4

    Use the roller cutter to trim along the edge of the ruler.

  5. Step 5

    Continue trimming each paper pieced edges, holding the ruler with the 1/4-inch mark on the outer black line of the pattern.

  6. Step 6

    Fold one side of the paper along the seam line and press it down with the handle of the scissors, the edge of the ruler, or any other firm object. This will make it easier to tear the paper.

  7. Step 7

    Tear the paper away carefully. Turn the quilt block a quarter turn and tear the paper off that side. Continue until all the paper pattern has been removed.
