How to Finish the Mitered Edge

Your quilt is just about finished. All you have to do is add the binding and the corners of your quilt need mitered edges; however, the thought of mitered edges scares you every time you think about it. Sewing a mitered edge onto a quilt is fairly easy and gives your quilt that perfect, finished look.

Things You'll Need:

• Quilt
• Binding
• Scissors
• Pins
• Needle
• Thread

1. Apply the bias binding all around the edges of your quilt. Make sure to sew through all the layers.

2. Trim the edges of the quilt all the way around the quilt. Leave only about 1/4 inch seam allowance. Be careful of cutting through your stitches, but make sure to remove all the excess batting and fabric. This makes turning the binding much easier and gives your quilt a more perfect look when it's completed.

3. Flip the binding around to the back of the quilt. Put a pin or two in place along each of the straight edges to hold the binding while you adjust the mitered edge.

4. Press the crease with your fingers to make it stay in place a little better. Fold the perpendicular edge over. Put a pin in place right where the two corners of fabric come together.

5. Sew by hand all the way around the back edges of the quilt to hold the binding in place. This makes the mitered corners of your binding nice and sharp on both the front and the back of your quilt.
