Hypnosis is a popular and effective method of treatment from everything to smoking and overeating. This skill and art form sometimes needs to be supplemented with other tools to facilitate the special state of consciousness that constitutes hypnotism. Follow some easy to follow steps to stimulate hypnosis whether you are a new hypnotist or a veteran or simply a normal person wishing to try self hypnosis.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that hypnotism utilizes an altered state of consciousness. In order to be beneficial to the person being hypnotized and to achieve an altered state of consciousness, sensory stimuli must be eliminated. Read up on the different stages of brain wave activity; alpha, beta, and theta refer to brain wave frequencies. In hypnotism, it is desired to get the subject to a beta brain wave state.

  2. Step 2

Have the subject close his eyes or utilize an eye mask to eliminate outside light. A darker environment is better to weed out possible light interruption on the brain. Instruct the subject (or yourself) to lie back in a comfortable position or sit comfortable with the limbs relaxed; the body should be scanned to eliminate any excess stress or tension.

  3. Step 3

Practice using a rhythmic and lulling vocal speaking style. During hypnotism, it's very important that the voice be soothing to listen to; in addition, any unpleasant ambient noise should be eliminated from the environment to prevent distraction from sirens, telephone ringers, or electronic buzzing noises.

  4. Step 4

Record the sound of your voice. Pay attention to the softness of your tone and the ease with which the words flow. If you are using self hypnotism, then you may have to alter your normal speaking voice and record the suggestion in an audio recorder so you can listen to the suggestion without reading it later.

  5. Step 5

Utilize soothing sounds to add to the hypnotic quality of the environment. Use relaxing and quiet music to achieve this end, such as classical piano or even smooth jazz. Try using nature sounds to help induce a state of relaxation such as the sound of waves or a gentle thunderstorm. These sounds typically induce a deeper state of relaxation in many people.

  6. Step 6

Encourage deep breathing and foster a safe and secure environment for the person to fall into a relaxed state. Prevent any interruptions during the hypnosis process. If you are practicing in a home or an office, then close the door and put a "do not disturb" sign in the area where you are performing the hypnotic suggestion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people find that taking the shoes off helps free the body from feeling constricted and bound.
  • Ensure that the subject is sufficiently relaxed before beginning to give any suggestions. Relaxation can be monitored by paying attention to the breath rate. Notice the flutter of the eye lids which indicates that consciousness has been altered.
  • Try using headphones to eliminate ambient or unwanted noise.
  • Do not attempt hypnotism without some form of formal training or extensive reading; it is a serious method that should be done by a professional.
