How to Flip Salmon in a Skillet

When you bake salmon in the oven you don't have to worry about turning halfway through, but you must use different rules when cooking on a stove top or grill. Whether or not the fish is marinated or topped with diced vegetables or seasonings, you must take care in turning salmon so it doesn't fall apart.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look to see how thick the salmon is to know how long you should cook it. General salmon rules state you should cook the fish for 10 minutes per inch of thickness. When cooking with a skillet, divide the time in half, turning once halfway.

  2. Step 2

Use a spatula to scrape off any extra marinade, vegetables or large bunches of seasoning from the top of the salmon. You don't want these ingredients to burn when you flip the fish.

  3. Step 3

Slide the spatula underneath the salmon. Take care to get completely under the fish, pushing the spatula toward the bottom of the skillet.

  4. Step 4

Slowly raise the spatula and turn it over, placing the uncooked salmon side against the heated skillet bottom. Center the fish in the skillet to make sure it cooks evenly.

  5. Step 5

Return the marinade, vegetables or seasonings to the top of the salmon to infuse the flavor into the fish. Add more ingredients if necessary and finish cooking until the center is done and the fish flakes easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use either salmon steaks or fillets in the skillet. You may find it easier to take the skin off before you cook it. This will allow the flavor to be applied to both sides of the fish.
