The Yule log ceremony is an ancient Christmas tradition. The ritual of getting the right Yule log and lighting it the correct way to bring peace upon one's home has changed. Today families make chocolate covered cakes and decorate them to represent the traditional Yule log. Here is how to unroll and frost a Yule log.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cover and refrigerate the Yule log for two hours or until it is cold all the way through. Use plastic wrap over the rolled Yule log. Find a safe location away from yearning fingers and other interfering objects.

  2. Step 2

Remove the Yule log from the refrigerator. Remove the plastic wrap. Carefully place the uncovered Yule log on the serving platter. Choose a platter that is larger than the Yule log.

  3. Step 3

Cut a one-inch slice of Yule log cake. Allow one end of the slice to be wider than the other end. Use a serrated knife for easier cutting. Place the slice on top of the Yule log. Place the thicker side of the slice on the higher end.

  4. Step 4

Warm the icing in the microwave for 7 to 10 seconds. Begin to ice the cake. Cover the entire cake with chocolate icing except for the rolled portion of the knot. The knot is the Yule log slice placed on top of the log.

  5. Step 5

Drag a fork along the log to make it look like bark. You are finished unrolling and frosting the Yule log. Now, you can move on to the decorations.
