The formal competition is in many ways the most rigorous part of a beauty pageant. Contestants must stand, walk and smile with poise, while wearing attire they may find uncomfortable. Your preparation in directing the formal category will go a long way to making this part of the event run as elegantly as it looks.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Outline the rules for the type of formal gown acceptable in this competition. Rule out low necks, semi formal or cocktail dresses, or other attire inappropriate to your theme, such as hoops, if you feel they would pose a danger.
Step2
Indicate the appropriate footwear for walking in long dresses. The shoe should barely show while contestants stand in their dresses and should not be too high or outlandish. Because the footwear finishes the outfit, it should coordinate appropriately with the dress. Provide a statement in your instructions to the effect that contestants can be disqualified for inappropriate dress or behavior. Most contestants and their parents will readily follow your instructions.
Step3
Rehearse movements of contestants so this event moves smoothly and quickly. In theater, this is called blocking and you should anticipate the flow of action both on and off stage so contestants have no distractions. The path off stage should be clear, on stage movements brisk, but unhurried. The music should provide the pace as well as enhance the mood. Remember to leave time for applause between contestants.

Tips & Warnings

  • In your instructions, let contestants know if accessories are permitted.
